I developed psychosis from smoking weed. Am I doomed for life?

Q.

I developed psychosis from smoking weed. I am on medication but never feel like my normal self and cannot function like i used to. It has had negative affects on all parts of my life. I have quit smoking weed now. Is there any chance that my mental health will go back to the way it used to be or am I doomed for life?

A.

Hi there, good mental health is really important and cutting out cannabis is a great first step to help you prevent relapse to psychosis and get back to your old self. Well done for achieving that.

Recovery does take time and it's different for every person, but it does happen for most if not all people. The earlier you get help the better.

Medication is important but it is only one strategy. It's also important to get involved in a range of activities to help you recover: counselling or therapy, getting back to work or study and starting to socialise again. Talk with the people who are supporting you with this to explore what other options are available to help your recovery. Meet with your doctor regularly about your medication and if any side effects appear, see your doctor straight away.

Most people will recover from psychosis. Stopping substance use and using medication are key to achieving that, so you are on the right track.
