I hear talk about marijuana making you unmotivated, anxious and paranoid while high, leaving you with boredom of non-stoned life.

Q.
I smoke hydroponic cannabis about once to twice a week. I maintain a very strong relationship with friends, family, relatives, and teachers, I have various hobbies, I longboard and weight train 5 times a week, and am in the IB program at high school with excellent marks.

I hear all this talk about marijuana making you unmotivated and having anxiety and paranoia while high, also leaving you with boredom of non-stoned life although I seem to be having no trouble at all with any of these issues; the next morning I feel exactly like myself. Is there something I am missing? Or are the changes so subtle that I just am not noticing that I, as a whole person, am gradually shifting?
A.
The effects you are talking about don't happen suddenly; they accumulate over time. The more you use the more likely they are to happen. Paranoia and anxiety can strike suddenly and unexpectedly, but that's different, and, unless you have some underlying mental problems it should wear off within hours or days.

The higher your usual performance levels, the more reserves you have to compensate for what starts out as pretty subtle losses. You may just end up a good athlete instead of a brilliant one, or a normal student instead of being a high achiever.

You are not going to be the first to notice what is happening to you; and you are not really going to accept it when others tell you you are "off your game", until it gets so obvious that you have lost the drive to do much about it.

None of the changes you have asked about seem to be permanent for most people. They wear off if you wait long enough; usually 6 to 9 months without marijuana seems to be enough to recover you mental agility. However, at age 16, your brain is in one of the most active developmental stages you will ever experience. Any drug-induced changes during this time might not be reversible, so be careful. Your developmental rush has a few years to go. There are penalities for marijuana use which some people think are worth risking, but for someone in your age bracket, the biggest penalty may be a self-imposed life sentence.
